Their success started with a great team. But even the worlds best players wouldnt get far without a skilled coach to pull the best out of each person. theyll never coalesce into a championship team. Strategically leading your team to success requires you to step out of the role of manager or worse, hall monitor: Micromanaging is counterproductive. Instead, follow these three steps to create an environment where your employees can rise to the challenge of excellence: Step 1: Verify. You wouldnt see a quarterback playing offensive tackle.

Make sure that job candidates have the right skills for the job they seek and that you want to fill.

Step 2: Certify. Once youve hired an employee, set him or her up for success by giving each one the training needed to excel. Step 3: Communicate.

Talk to your team and let everyone know your expectations. Delegate responsibility. Then give each person the authority to carry out what he or she does best. Dont let a mediocre team hold you back from greater success.
